This week, I got a start on going from the character turnaround I made, to making a full 3D version of the character, while also following along with the lessons on how to do so.
For the rubberhose character whose turnaround I created, I started with their torso. The idea when modeling a low-poly character this way, is to match the 3D model with the 2D reference material as closely as possible to create the full character. In this case the model started with a cube for the torso that was gradually modified and extruded until it matched the character from the front and sides.
The character being created from the lesson follows much the same pattern. I started with the legs instead of the torso, and a six sided cylinder instead of a cube, but the principle is the same; modify and add to the mesh until it resembles the character from both the front and side views.
Progress on this character is going a bit faster, since I'm focusing on them while I follow the lesson. Already their torso is almost completely modeled, as well as their arms and the top parts of their legs. It felt a lot trickier following the lesson though; although I'm following as exactly as I can, it feels like there's a lot of differences between my model and the model being demonstrated in the video.
That's all for this week!
